Skating Polly – Live review

Skating Polly were the last bad I reviewed before my break from writing so it feels cyclical to be putting this out just over a year later. Check back soon for the interview I did with them before the show.

Just over a year since they first graced Scotland Skating Polly have finally come back around. Playing this time in Edinburgh at our beloved Queen’s Hall in support of the audacious Kate Nash, the sisterhood two piece have expanded their membership with the addition of brother Kurtis on drums. His energetic addition to their sound completes them as a band yet it feels like he has always been there. As they effortlessly slip from opener Pretective Boy to Louder in Outer Space, a track from their latest EP New Trick, it is obvious that the crowd approves. The room goes up in roars as soon as Peyton’s vocal hits the clammy air and when the chorus has been reached everyone is dancing.

Their on stage energy is buzzing and all three musicians seem to be pushing out their best performance the most impressive of which tonight comes from Kelli. The fuzz on her three stringed bass is demanding of attention and the sound she eaks out of it during Stop Digging is enviable. Her voice however is the stuff of punk ass dreams. The level of screeching she is able to reach for Alabama Movies literally broke my ears and I loved every second of it.

Coming to a close on their set with an inevitable instrument swap we are played out in a chaotic wave of noise as Kelli’s voice breaks perfectly over the top of Peyton destroying the percussion and Kurtis expertly playing the guitar with a drum stick. Fucking brilliant.
