With no guitars in sight, Tegan and Sara’s indie sound has been transformed in to synth-pop heaven with addictive 80’s style beats and floor filing melodies. Boyfriend’s intro is reminiscent of ABC’s 80’s classic, The Look of Love, as a simple beat gets built up by intricate sound effects before bursting in to the catchy chorus; “You treat me like your boyfriend and trust me like a very best friend”. U-Turn on the other hand has a life all of its own with massive, punchy synth from beginning to end, a brilliant example of how the bands talent for pop music has developed since their 2013 album, Heartthrob.
Although their genre may have taken a massive leap forward, the subject matters of love, heartbreak and relationships remains ever so Tegan and Sara. Always drawing from experience, their songs are relatable and unashamedly personal, qualities that have earned them a loyal fan base as well as international recognition for their work. Set to be released on June 3rd, Love You To Death feels like it could be a real step up for the band, possibly leading to the mainstream attention that they so deserve.
